'Last Light'

I was hoping to have had my bluebell painting finished by now especially as they are in full bloom at the moment, but unfortunately I haven't done as much painting as I'd have liked this month due to the Easter Holidays but I have managed to finish this one which I started back in January, it's of Steephill Cove looking towards Woody Point on the Isle of Wight.

I've called it 'Last Light' as it was painted from a photograph that I'd taken about half hour before sunset on a January afternoon after a walk down to Steephill Cove.

I was experimenting with my watercolours again with this one and I'm really happy with how the sky turned out, but wasn't so happy with the rest of it, hence it got put to one side!

I found it really hard to convey the sea in watercolour as it had lots of light glistening on it and as the light was fading on the cliffs I found it difficult to distinguish these too, so it sat and simmered, until I picked it up again this month and added some pastel to it, I found that by dragging a white pastel over the sea area it gave me the effect of the sea that I was after as the pastel just sat on the textured surface leaving glimpses of the original watercolour below.

An alternative method I could have used for the sea in the initial stage of the watercolour painting is masking fluid, it is a liquid latex-based product that is very effective at keeping areas white that have been painted with it. The rubber prevents the paint from reaching the paper and can be peeled off afterwards to reveal the untouched white paper.

Other news this month...

I'm fortunate enough to have been asked to feature two of my paintings in 'The Isle of Wight Artists' Calendar' for 2023, it's lovely calendar that celebrates Isle of Wight landscape artists; the calendar contains artist contact info, local history and event dates, so watch this space.

I will also be participating in the new monthly 'East Cowes Indoor Market' at East Cowes Town Hall from 12.30pm to 4.30pm on the following dates: 14th May, 9th July, 17th September and 19th November, the market will have a selection of local producers, artisans and business owners and I will be selling my original artwork, prints and cards.
