What Is Chiaroscuro?

Chiaroscuro is an artistic method that produces a strong difference between light and dark sections in a piece of art.

The word chiaroscuro originates from the Italian terms chiaro, which means "clear" or "light,” and scuro, which means "dark.” The interpretation of chiaroscuro in painting has evolved through time, yet it consistently involves areas of high contrast between light and dark within a single artwork.

In my latest painting, which is still a work in progress, I have attempted to incorporate this particular technique. My aim with this painting is to convey the brightness of the sky, and I believe that the most effective way to depict light is by juxtaposing it with its opposite within the same composition. I am uncertain whether I have successfully achieved the desired effect yet. To enhance the brightness of the sunlight, I think I need to darken the surrounding grey areas and perhaps leave more white space unpainted to represent the sun itself. Despite these considerations, I am content with the current state of the painting. However, I am hesitant to make any adjustments with watercolor as I fear losing elements that I appreciate. Stay tuned for updates!

I want to express my gratitude to all who visited my Open Studios last month. Hearing your reactions to my art in person truly makes it all worthwhile. Thank you for your support and encouragement!

I will next be exhibiting along with other Island artists in the 'Landscape Paintings of the Isle of Wight 40th Annual Exhibition' which is on Saturday 9th November until Sunday 17th November at Ventnor Botanic Garden in the Echium Room.
